LIVE AND UNSIGNED

Live and Unsigned..its always been slightly annoying, travelling for hours on end in sweaty cars that smell of our frequent McDonald's trips to play 4 minute sets isn't exactly my idea of fun.
The competition was an experience to remember, but the constant X-factor Britains'sGotTalent-esque nature of it all came off quite tacky and was a chore to peservere with. Nevertheless I can now say I have visited more of England than I would have previously, which is a plus I guess. Or not.
The whole thing did have its enjoyable parts, albeit it they were few and far between....for example, the stages were always roomy. And Brighton's nicer than I thought it was.
Michael McLaren seemed to go out of his way to look and act as bored as humanly possible, when asked halfway through the competition if any of the bands had appealed to his liking, the answer was a blunt, 'No.' Obviously, he had been paid to sit there and look menacing, and the competition could have really done without him.
I can't forsee Shiva entering any similar competitions in the future, purely because of the incovenience and the expensive 'pay to play' way they are run. If you're looking to do your own thing and keep it original, avoid these sorts of competitions at all costs. Only run of the mill bands need apply.- Alex Saleh
GOOD GIG...BAD TRAFFIC

BRAKIN' ARTS FESTIVAL, LUTON, 19 June

Milly Dawson, singer from Shiva
Milly here,
19th June we drove down to Luton to play two gigs as part of their Brakin' Arts Festival at The Hat Factory. When we got out of the car we were walking along to the venue and Henry looked down and saw that there were stacks of a local magazine and on the cover there was a photo of me looking hideous. So we all got a laugh out of that and I died with shame that the whole of Luton was picking up these magazines with me on the cover, luckily no one seemed to realise.
Just before sound check this strange old man came up to us and started talking to us about how he was going to be famous because he was in this final of a competition and we should come along, he said it cost £10 but it was worth it because he danced and sang. When he went to sit down I noticed he had a bag of sliced bread which he was eating. Whilst we were sound checking a man came down and asked us if we could keep the acoustic drums down because there was a poetry reading going on upstairs...
The band before us was a two piece who sounded like they were playing Juno music and the boy was wearing a dress with whiskers drawn on with eyeliner and sparkly pink cat ears. We always seem to play with pretty odd people.
When we played our first set it was good because the sound was great, not exactly a huge crowd but it was good enough and the old man was sitting in the front twitching -- with excitement I guess. Then he started to do impressions of me so he would stand up and spin around in a circle. After we were done he came up on stage and asked if he could sing a song with us which we were up for because we thought it was hilarious but we didn't know the song he requested - 'Shake It All Aaround'. He seemed pretty hurt that we didn't know it which was sad but he told us each in turn that we should go on X-Factor and Britain's Got Talent and that we could be famous and then told us again how he was going to be famous. He asked for our autographs and I wrote 'hope you get famous' which I'm sure pleased him and then he was off to a karaoke night.
Shiva & co. went out for dinner and we went into a little Italian restaurant and the woman said 'we only have two pizzas left.' Who only has two pizzas when you're in an Italian restaurant, 8pm on a Friday? So we just went to a Chinese instead.
When we played the second set there were a lot more people there and it was fun. We were all a bit squished on stage but it was good and Alex's dad Steve filmed us because we needed to send a live video of us to someone on this website.
Not our first paid gig, but nearly. £100 collectively, £20 each. Pretty decent, I spent it on clothes the weekend after in Brick Lane. Good gig, bad traffic home.
xx Milly
