FRIDAY NIGHT UBR NIGHT IN LONDON...2010-07-08 00:32:38I'm really excited about the UBR night on Friday at Barfly in Camden. I get pretty nervous before every UBR showcase night because I just want there to be loads of people there- 1. So the bands are playing to a wicked crowd and 2. So loads of other bands come down and I get to meet some of the bands on UBR.
This Friday is going to be amazing- just putting the finishing touches on it all. Gill Mills from Best of MySpace will be presenting the bands on stage and we'll have some film crew filming it all. There are LOADS of industry people due to come down from Universal, Warner Brothers, and all sorts. Ahh...I feel really nervous that it will be ok. As soon as all the bands turn up and the sound checks are over I will be a happy bunny.
Total Guitar magazine's editor will be coming along, as well as some other key music media people, and other panelist people from UBR.
Potentially with the amazing line up we have and everything else supposidly in place this should be the best showcase night yet!!!
Saying that the Brighton showcase in March was great. It was packed and sold out in advance. Gary Moore the guitarist was there too which made it extra exciting.
They did a little feature on me/UBR in an inflight magazine (!) this month - you can see the interview here if you are interested...http://cde.cerosmedia.com/1G4c289fc88c375012.cde/page/51
Let me know what you think on facebook or Twitter (TheUBR).
See ya! CANCELLED GIGS ;-(
2010-06-29 14:34:23
I was really excited about playing a gig tonight at the 229 Club in London tonight but it was cancelled at last minute by the promoters because the attendence hasn't been good recently at their gigs because of the World Cup.
The festival that we were supposed to play at - Sellinge Festival - was also cancelled at last minute last month so we didn't get to play that gig either. I feel pretty bad on the rest of the band because Riche (drums) and John (guitar/synths) have to take time off well in advance for gigs because they work in the Theatre industry. I hope no more gigs get cancelled or they won't have any more holiday time to take off for gigs. Eeek!
Anyway- John borrowed a dead expensive mic from work last week and we ended up recording some vocals properly for the first time on a track. I think it sounds ok- it hasn't been mixed yet but it is the world of a difference using a proper condenser mic as opposed to the SM58 we have been using to get rough tracks down in practices. We have been re-working the song "Star of Bethnal Green" loads and now the vocals, drums, and bass has been recorded I think we'll start looking for some producers to do a mix down for us. I still feel like the song needs tweaking and cutting down still but we are definitely getting there. Now - time to sweet talk some producers...
BAND PSYCHOTHERAPIST PLEASE???
2010-06-03 14:09:13
I went down to the legendary 02 arena last night to see the British Music Experience exhibition to witness the Futures wall- a 30ft cinema screen in the exhibition where we are featuring an artist from UBR each month. This month it is Leddra Chapman. They get a few artists from the major labels who have just been signed, and play their music vids, an artist from the PRS and one from UBR. It was really exciting to see Leddra Chapmans video being played on the massive screen knowing that literally thousands of visitors see her video each week. I thought she was the best artist on there- but I guess I'm just biased!
Sat in the sun after work with some friends last night- the Cat and Mutton at London Fields. We got into a silly convo about UBR having a band psychologist on the panel to deal with all the issues that bands have. I actually think it would be quite a good idea. My friend Andy said that he'd like to be the psychologist on UBR because he did a psychology degree at UNI. It sounds like a mad idea but I actually think it would be quite good. It is amaaaaazing being in a band but it does get tough sometimes. In our band we recently got some feedback from a festival and they didn't really like our stuff. We thought that they were going to put us on mainstage and think we are amazing- but no- they didn't think we'd fit. It was only one knock back and we do get loads of positive feedback from people- it just put a little dampner on things. Also - our synth player has been moving house and on holiday so we haven't been practicing much meaning that we are not getting better for our other gigs. I am sure once we have our next rehearsal everything will be back on track- it is just quite easy to get on a downer sometimes when it isn't all going exactly how you want. Oh and to top it all off- the festival that we ARE playing at next week has moved us from mainstage to the "Wofo stage". What the F*** is the "wofo stage?!".
OK- so maybe we'll be first in line for the band psychologist. "Andy...over to you???"
93 FEET EAST WITH MUSICBORN
2010-05-12 14:47:19
We had an incredible gig at 93 Feet East on Brick Lane a few weeks ago. I am still buzzing from it now. It was such a pleasure to play there- the promotor and sound man made it really stress free. The sound system in the venue is just incredible and to be honest I'd say I much preferred playing there then The Barfly in Camden- even though they are both great venues. The sound man was really sensitive to our set-up- having lots of synths, acoustic cello and my vocals which are so soft it is hard for them to cut through with the massive drums and bass sound. Anyway- THANK YOU amazing sound man! The promoters are called Musicborn which is headed up by a lovely chap and musician called Chris. He was so understanding- as a musician himself. After the gig he said he wanted to book us straight away for another gig- RESULT! That was the first 'industry' person to pay real compliments to us and who enjoyed our set a lot. It meant a lot and kept us really motivated.
Our last gig was last Friday at McQueens in Shoreditch. This was a Crazed Caberet night put on by Bangers and Mash promoter Emily Rawlinson. I hadn't heard of McQueens when she suggested playing there but I snapped it up- we just want to play any gigs we can at the moment to get the experience and to enjoy getting our music out to new people. After the last gig I thought that this gig would be even better but sadly no- I feel pretty demotivated after it (and still trying to keep the buzz from 93 Feet East in my head). The sound guy was complaining when we got there that the sound system had been tampered with and he just seemed like he didn't want to be there. This was just so different from 93 Feet East where the sound man was so passionate and loving every minute. McQueens is a cocktail bar and pretty glitzy so not really what we are used to- with the dedicated gig venues we have played at before. Just before we started to play the sound guy came over and said we need to do all our line checks again because the system had been tweaked. He said all good to go- and we played the set- and song by song I had to say over the mic to ask him to increase the vox and increase the cello because I COULD NOT HEAR A THING ON STAGE- NOT A THING! I was thinking so much about that - that I couldn't really perform the songs properly and felt really uncomfortable which obviously comes across to the audience. It can really throw you when the sound isn't right for the gig or the vibe is a bit wierd. I know you have to start somowhere- i.e not always have the most dedicated people working with you. Anyway- enough of the moaning- so...after the set I went and sat backstage avoiding getting feedback from friends who came down and feeling a bit crap. The burlesque dancer who runs the entertainment and who is a dancer came backstage and said- "wow really loved your stuff- we'll have to re-book you for more nights here...here is my card...make sure you email me!". Although it had been a bit of an up and down night- her words really picked me up and I thought it was very sweet of her. Bless the burleque dancer!
INTERVIEW WITH FINK
2010-03-08 02:08:18
If you haven't heard of Fink then it is time to get his music on your iTunes. Fink is a band fronted by the lovely Fin- who plays beautiful songs whilst playing guitar and backed up by a drummer and bassist. I'd heard his music recently on my friends ITunes playlist and couldn't believe that I had only just discovered him.
I contacted his manager to get an interview with him for the UBR TV show. I was interested to know his story of becoming a full time well known singer song writer.
In the interview last week we talked about his process of song writing, how he works with the rest of the band; writing/rehearsing new music, where he rehearses, how many rehearsals they do before a gig, and some stuff about his studio. I thought I was interegating him but when his manager kept saying that he had to leave to go to his next appointment - he wanted to carry on talking. Not sure how our editor is going to trim down the interview for a 10 minute show when we spoke for over an hour. I was really inspired by meeting him and by his music. This interview will be shown on UBR in a few weeks so keep your eyes out- it is serious gold for bands who want to get tips from a successful established artist. If you haven't got his music - there is lots on Spotify. Pretty Little Thing has to be my fave track of his- the vibe, the guitar sounds wicked!
BARFLY- GIG NUMBER 2
2010-03-03 04:24:54
I can't believe it is over and we did it- but we got through our second ever gig at the amazing Barfly in Camden. It was an incredible experience and we pretty much packed the place with inquisitive friends and colleagues. We had a little band practice at the Premises studio on Hackney Road prior to the sound check, then pretty calmly turned up at the venue about half an hour early, and sound checked a few tracks. It was soooo damm exciting sound checking at a venue with perfect sound, really enthusiastic and helpful (comminicative) sound and stage people. They really were just amazing and made us feel welcome as well as being talented sound engineers. After the sound check although we had brought the equivilent of three suitcases full of clothes we decided we didn't have anything appropriate to wear on stage other than a few hats and a pair of thigh high PVC boots! Hmmm..so we went over to Camden Market following the sound check to pick up some clothes to wear on stage. we probably looked like we had just walked out of Oxfam afterwards - once we had picked the gear because nothing matched - and it was all pretty random. We all went for completely different styles =regardless of the hours and hours we had spent talking about and planning out the state of affairs for stage gear. Oh well! A lesson learned for next time. To be honest we were more concerned about delivering a great set on this particular gig. We just wanted to nail the music. It was just unfortunate that it really is pretty much ...or near...impossible to play cello, put cello down, grab the microphone, sing, pick up cello again, and dance around, whilst delivering a set on stage. I gave it a go- but it really was pretty damn wobbly up there in those heals. Might re-assess the PVC boots for the next gig. All in all- other than the mic coming off the cable in the first verse of the first song (!) all was ok in the end. We got through the set, I didn't fall over, and no one had a nervous breakdown. In fact all the people who came to the gig seemed to really love it and the party afterwards was great at Ant's place (bass player). The little roof top terrace all night dancing and shenanigans with all our pals was just the right way to celebrate our first proper gig. Nice! Can't wait for the next one now. Where are we playing- the Hammersmith Apollo??!!!??!!!
FIRST EVER GIG. WE DID IT!
2010-02-17 01:01:12
The week before we had our first ever gig with the band. It was a small venue in Leicester Square and we didn't tell too many people about it because we wanted to test it all out. With that in mind we weren't really expecting a pretty full venue from the other bands fans. I'd never done a gig singing before, and I decided to play guitar in one of the tracks, and pick up the cello every now and then to do intro's and breakdowns...Hmmm...and to top it all off I lost my voice the day before and should really have gone in for the Dot Cotton impression competition instead.Unfortuntely it was only a last minute thing to decide to play the gig and I'd do it Dot Cotton styley. I was thinking of cancelling but didn't want to let the band down. Anyway- being late we got 5 minutes to sound check out of the hour that was allocated. So...what can I say overall about playing the gig. Well I liked the venue- The Comedy- it was small but the sound wasn't too bad at all. The sound guy was really helpful. The stage was pretty small and at one point I thought I was going to fall off!Costume wise- I went for the big boots and two small mini top hats, Ant wore the big top hat, Riche was in the BIG horns, and Squirta opted for the silver surfer shining hat. Again out of the hours (probably days worth of conversations about the clothing) - we probably only wore about 20% of what we had anticipated...again a time issue! At the end the feedback was good. Everyone clapped. There was a big wave of "more!" coming from the audience for a few minutes (that was unexpected). Apparently you couldn't hear my vocals well. I was secretly glad about that- knowing that I couldn't actually reach half the notes. Looking forward to playing next week at The Barfly - on Friday 26th. Feel free to come down if you fancy laugh! I think that we'll be circus style again...but what the heck! If we can at least turn up to the sound check on time I'll be happy this time.
ELIZA DOOLITTLE- AT PROUD GALLERIES
2009-12-11 19:25:15
On Wednesday we were invited to interview young Eliza Doolittle at Proud Galleries as part of our TV show that is coming out in the New Year. She was recently signed to EMI and I was very interested to hear what she is up to, and what her story was - how she got signed and how it all started. She was very sweet and was really professional in the interview and was not phased by the camera. Luckily all the interviews I stay well behind that camera because those things freak me out and I start talking like a robot when one is put in my face. Red light on. Paranoia button ON!
Eliza's performance after the interview was cool- she certainly has an old skool charm about her- I loved the backing vocals and the double bass. The whole band are really stylised and 1950's chic. It was all quite polished but quite raw at the same time which doesn't quite make sense when you come to explain it. You need to see it to understand. Check her out and see what you think!

I LOVE ERIK HASSLE
2009-11-30 00:17:24
Oh well the interview with Erik Hassle on Friday was a fabulous experience after all after necking a Red Bull, followed by a Red Bull shot to keep the old energy levels up after that stinking hang over from the Record of the Day Awards the night before!Erik was SUCH a nice chap and was on the level with our more out there questions that we put in at the end! The only Swedish related question that I could think of - off the cuff- was "How many suedes do you eat per day!" ...and funnily enough I he didn't know what a suede was so that kinda killed that one. The question about how many anus's he had and how many nipples his guitarist had probably went a bit too far...but hey ho!
In all seriousness I was really inspired by Erik. He has just been signed to Island Records and is a seriously talented chappy. Erik has an incredible charm about him and was very open in his interview about his experiences of giving up everything at the age of 17 to live in the studio and just concentrate on his music having no money and without the complete support of his parents. He went ahead and stuck to what he believed in no matter what- and now at the age of 21 is signed to one of the best labels in the world and is doing some great things! Amazing.
After the interview I watched his acoustic performance at his show and again was really inspired by how the songs were so powerful (even the more electro ones from his myspace), just being performed on the guitar and vocals. He had amazing stage presence just doing an acoustic set which is really unusual. There was definitely some magic about him.
I am desperate to see another of his gigs now.
If you like pure pop- definitely go and get tickets to Erik Hassle. A true little inspiration.
MUSIC JOURNALISM AND PR AWARDS
2009-11-27 20:06:40
I'm looking forward to interviewing Erik Hassle tonight backstage at his London gig. Its interesting that he is a Swedish artist, and wonder how he is getting on over there. He is signed to Island in the UK which is how I found out about him on my last trip to Universal - after playing them some of the best UBR bands that are listed on the website.
The only thing is that I have to get over, in the next hour, my awful hang over from the Music Journalism and PR Awards that was at Sosho last night.
It was a fab night last night - I got chatting to some cool music industry people - some of which have said that they would love to get involved with UBR. Can't mention any names yet but ...they are music journalists at the top of the food chain! Watch this space!
I left last night after about 6 glasses of wine and still holding normal conversations- but any more than that and I think I may have ruined the reputation of the website!!! Probably wasn't very rock n roll of me...but there is definitely a time and a place for rock n roll...and I don't think last night- being in a room full of music journos from NME, The Sun, Observer, Independent, The FLy, and the biggest PR companies out there- it DEFINITELY wasn't in the interest of the business to start getting all 'rock n roll'. I hope that you are all proud!
LAST NIGHTS UBR GIRLS NIGHT
2009-11-20 16:52:12
Last nights second UBR showcase was yet again a bloody great night. We had four bands playing - Ellie Lawson was up first. Ellie did an acoustic set with guitar, vocals, and another guitarist who also did some rythmns on the jembe drum. Ellie is a serious pro- every part of every song just seemed to have an amazing perfection. There is something about the way Ellie sings and performs and the way that her songs are contructed that you just feel drawn to watching her...and you know in your mind that she was born to be an artist- there is no escaping that. Even though she kicked off the nights music in front of a room packed full of eager bands and networking artists with an acoustic set - the power of her songs just kept everyone drawn in and captivated throughout her whole set.
I'd absolutely love to go and see her play live with the full band. I imagine it to be really really exciting. Wow- another artist that will be going on my iPod while I run around London every day trying to find more opportunities for bands for UBR. Thanks Ellie. A true inspiration!Next up was Anneca. I was really intrigued to see how the live set would be after hearing her wicked music on Myspace. Anneca is a really energetic performer and fun to watch. The band were obviously having loads of fun on stage which is so important and defintely made the audience feel at ease. There were some cool covers in the set too which were a surprise and crowd pleasers. When you are performing to a room full of musicians and bands who come from all different styles and cultures I think I would be a little nervous that I wouldn't be able to please the whole room- but Anneca really did pull off a very cool and entertaining little set. When I looked round the room practically every face had a big smile plastered across it. The third band on were The Shindig Addicts fronted by Natalia. These guys came down to the last demo drop night which is how we came across them. The band name really reflects the vibe of their band in general and the performance coz again these guys were really fun to watch and they were obviously having a right laugh on stage and really loving the opportunity to perform their songs. I have heard a few of their songs before, but not too many times, but I found myself singing along to some of them. I felt like I should have known this band for years because I don't generally pick up new songs quickly. I don't even remember songs that I have written myself and end up holding up my laptop in front of the mic at band practice- with lyrics written on! Basically- these guys are wicked and full of an amazing and charming energy. Would definitely recommend seeing them live. You're guaranteed to like it. I can't imagine anyone not liking it...they are just that kind of band! The final band of the night who had come all the way from Cornwall- were Marble Fairy. Going with the theme of the night this was another female fronted band. When these guys started the vibe of the bar really lifted dramatically. They have a really big sound which is made up of guitar, bass, vox, backing vocals, keys, synths. The style was pop ...electro...and what they were trying to pull off with the concept and style ...really came off! These guys are seriously good musicians and the songs were amazing too. I was stunned at this lot. Can't wait to see them play again. When is the next gig? Next week did you say???
BATHROOM SESSIONS
2009-10-26 15:57:20
Given that the acoustics seem to be better in bathrooms I have spent an awful lot of time recently in my bathroom, friends bathrooms, toilets of pubs and bars...both writing and performing mini gigs with me and the guitar. I'm really lovin it because I am getting to try out some new material when there are genuinely great acoustics for the sound of the guitar and vocals to echo a bit more around and sound better. Lovin bathrooms!Whilst in Shoredich eating a much needed hang over breakfast yesterday, before band practice, I noticed that "The Premises" cafe is also a recording studio, which is in their toilets....how bizare! Ha. Its kinda funny that bathrooms all over the place are getting the benefit of being intro'd to lots of music. And whist on that subject...the toilets of "The Breakfast Club" in Hoxton Square are sign posted as "the Smallest nightclub in the world" and they really are...they are properly kitted out with music systems and the ambience of somewhere where you can have a boogie. If you are still in party/dancing mode after a night out...The Breakfast club is definitely one to go to if you fancy trying out some bathroom/music lovin and you don't have to have a guitar with you!I'd be interested to know if there are any other guitar playing/song writing bathroom addicts...or is it just me?!!
MY NEW BAND=AMAZING.
2009-10-22 13:45:29
Since the last blog and all that talk of finding a band I have
1. Found three amazing band members
2. Had about 10 band practices
3. Got our first gig sorted (AHH!)
4. Written about 8 new songs
5. Found a producer to work on one of the tracks
6. Had 'the most amazing experience of my life' at band practice.
7. Feel like the happiest person alive because of 1-6.Oh and 8. We have a designer who is designing our band t-shirts who is amazing. In March time- I felt musically frustrated because I couldn't find a band to get my music out there live for gigs and out of my little bedroom recording/studio set-up into the big wide world to see what the hell will happen doing the songs live. Now I have the best band in the world! The gig might be a total disaster but I just feel like I have to give it a go and see what happens. It is sounded bloody amazing at band practices to hopefully that should translate well once on stage at a gig. Hmmmm....exciting times ahead! The reason I am speaking in bullet points today- is because whilst this has been going on, every Sunday, things at UBR have been kicking off in an amazing way with LOTS happening! Anyway this is some of it...here go more bullet points...1. We have a load more people on the UBR TEAM- from A&R- Island records are on, Warner Brothers, Coda, Yoad Nevo (Producer) to review your music/band.
2. The first episodes of UBR TV have come out on Freewire TV
3. We have done a load of deals with some companies which provide things to help bands (to put it simply!)...we'll be launching them this week so keep an eye out.
4. We have the next demo drop night coming up on the 19th November, and a series of events around the country next year (Feb).
5. We've had bands tracks played on NME Radio
6. And lots more...I'll be more thorough in my next blog.
oh yes another forgotten one...
7. We had about 15 tracks from UBR bands confirmed for a TV series...as the sound track. WHoop whoop!Over and out.
MUSICAL MADNESS AND HEDONISM
2009-08-31 22:53:38
Just had the most amazing weekend of music. It started with some jazz in Shoredich on Friday, then progressed to writing a song with a busker in Hoxton Sq, to seeing an absolutely fantasic band last night in The Old Blue Last (Shoredich)- Teenagers in Tokyo. They were followed by an even more amazing artist but I didn't catch his name- he was playing drums, whilst singing, setting off drum samples and synths, and had a strobe light under his drums! it was really incredible. Everyone there just went insane during his performance- I looked round at one point and every person in the venue had the biggest smile on their faces. There was a couple at the front of the venue who were dancing so hard and loving it so much that they literally ripped all their clothes off and were dancing in their underwear- now that is true appreciation for you!! lol. I must admit we were dancing pretty hard ourselves- you couldn't not. But seriously - fair play to the couple at the front. It was almost as if the audience was part of the show- although not intended or planned. We ended up at a rave party in London bridge - which was a great end to an awesome weekend of discovering new music. This whole weekend has been really enlighening - and has really inspired me in my music writing. I can't wait to lay down some beats and think that my bass lines are way too light at the moment and I don't take enough efffort in my producing. I am gonna concentrate on drums and bass for a bit- and build the songs up that way. Listening to amazing heavy dance music all weekend made me realise how powerful it is, how much I miss rave, and how exciting it would be to create something that impactful in my own music. The limit are endless are endless with music.
UBR NIGHT.
2009-08-31 22:23:21
It was an amazing night at the UBR demo drop and showcase on Thurs. Minus IQ and I Call Shotgun gave a consistantly energetic and perfect performace, which was appreciated by LOTs of industry people and bands- the venue was packed! Can't wait for the next one, which will be in a few months time. Keep checking the site for more info.
It couldn't have been more of a perfect evening- everything went to plan and everyone walked out smiling which was great to see. It was more of a party atmosphere- with the bands and the industry folk getting to know each other. Really really nice vibes. The team are looking forward to see what treats are in the demo bag- from the demo's that were dropped into the venue on the night.
Ah....Good times!
SINGING ICS IN THE SHOWER
2009-08-25 15:41:47
I had a wonderful time in the shower today singing I Call Shotgun's new track "Evie". I really like it...I think they need female vocal harmonies on it though. (hint hint)...just kidding. I am under strict instructions from their manager that I can't play it to anyone because it is not mastered and not quite ready which is quite frustrating coz when I hear an amazing track I like to play it to everyone I know.I can't wait to hear that track on the radio when it is released.I remember when I first heard a track that I played on - on the radio. I was in a taxi...and it came on...and I thought ...'hang on..how come someone has copied my intro using exactly the same effects pedal as me...!?' and got all angry for a second. When I realised it was my bands track...I literally screamed and think I deafened the poor cab driver. I got out of the cab and continued to scream! hmmm....it was only a little local radio station but it could have been Radio One...I didn't care. It was amazing anyway. I do miss my old band. Even though I love doing my own bedroom producing/writing it is nice to get excited with the whole band when you all write something cool together and then gigging it.
ITUNES FESTIVAL - BAT FOR LASHES
2009-07-23 16:29:18
I was really excited to be invited to the Bat for Lashes gig on Sunday at The Roundhouse as part of the iTunes festival. I'd heard some of BFL music before and kinda liked the vibe. I guess she caught my interest because she uses strings in her music a lot and I do too. I first heard about her from her manager who I met on the underground last summer- we got chatting and both realised we were working in the music industry so kept in contact. To cut a long story short...went along to the gig on Sunday and it was one of the best gigs I have ever seen. The use of the visuals, lights and music was just outstanding beyond belief. The songs are all quite mystical and I didn't think I would enjoy the gig as much as I did because i generally get bored quite easily. The drums were almost tribal and so powerful and the ravy bass synths and beats just made the whole performance really captivating.
The lights and the visuals were perfect. What I loved about the show is that Natasha isn't an ego front person....she is almost animal like ... like a cartoon character. I beleive she is off to the states for some gigs soon- but if you can catch her in concert...I would totally recommend going. It was almost like seeing a West End Show....without the cheesiness. Just a whole performance of total perfection. i can't remember one song...as they are not catchy songs...but I was stunned by the whole performance and can't wait to see the show again and wonder how it is put across in smaller venues without the all singing all dancing set-up of screens and lights. I'm going to check out to see if she has any live performances of older gigs on youtube. It just shows that with bigger budgets what amazing things can be acheived. For me for now...its just me, a guitar, and a cello and a few dodgy drum loops and a copy of Logic but I still love it!
PRS EVENT...SPEECH DEBELLE
2009-07-23 16:06:02
At the PRS Almost Famous night a few weeks ago I saw a really great artist called Speech Debelle, I think they are signed to Ninja Tunes. It was really freshing seeing a young female MC and singer, with a guitar based backing band. Her songs were awesome and had a very unique charm about the band. I noticed in the paper yeserday that she is up for a Mercury Award. Well I think she should win. Seriously. I remember being really tired that night and pushed myself to go to the gig and there were two quite uninspiring acts before her, and she came on stage and definitely brought some magic to the evening. I hope Speech Debelle win the award. They deserve it.
UBR GIGS...I CALL SHOTGUN AND HERELDEDUKE
2009-06-27 03:47:35
As part of our relationship with the promoters at Proud Galleries in Camden- this month we have put on two UBR bands- Hereldeduke and I Call Shotgun. I was really looking forward to seeing Hereldeduke because of their contemporary electro-ness with live drums, guitar and vox. I listen to their music on iTunes all the time- but always wondered how it all pans out in the live situation. Seeing them live at Proud was brilliant and Ollie was a very cool front man- nice chilled vox. I love their drummer - he was just awesome on drums ...really really awesome. I know these guys don't have a mountain of gigs on at the moment- but check out their myspace and try and get to a gig if you can. I don't think you'll be disappointed. They are def on my band love list.
I Call Shotgun - we put these guys on the Proud stage last Friday night. I must say last week was tiring, and come Friday I was't really feeling like going out, and it was hot, heavy bag, and the tube was packed...anyway..to cut a long story short...I went along to the ICS gig and was really stunned by how great they are live and was bloody glad I went. Think the power of the bass synths and grooves of Little Boots and Lady Gaga...and mix it with the energy that Red Hot Chilli Peppers put into a performance. BUT saying that these guys are really unique- I couldn't actually directly say that they are like X or Y...they have elements of different great artists all rolled into one very exciting package. I would love to see these guys on a massive stage somewhere. Can't wait for their next gig. I saw Little Boots play live a couple of weeks ago at the 'iTunes Live' show- and I thought they were good but a little boring to watch. I Call Shotgun just seem to have everything in terms of the performance and vibe. The only thing I didn't get was any chorus flash backs in the shower....or on the bus the next day. I'd love to have an I Call Shotgun track that I can easily remember- just because I am so bloody forgetful (again- the days of partying taking hold!)- I'm just simple and like simple tunez. I still have "Doo be doo run run run" in my head from seeing Roy Ayers at Southport Festival in May....I love that Roy Ayers track and I don't have to think too much to remember it.
C-STAR
2009-06-27 03:25:08
Its been a while since the last blog and time has shot past. Ok to back track - about a month ago I was asked to be on the judging panel for an X-Factor style web based TV show which was kind of bizare. It was great seeing pop acts doing covers and really trying to make them their own. I mean I'm not an expert on music- I just love listening and playing it...and have a wide personal taste so I suppose I know in my own mind what sounds good and what doesn't. Anyway- so I sat on a panel with three other judges and gave some feedback to some of the artists. My problem was that I'm not the best at being in front of a camera- and hell were there a lot of cameras that night! I suppose it was quite sureal because I'm just not used to seeing live pop artists. It was all backing track and dance routine craziness de la max. A different world to what I am used to. Since starting to try and sing my own tracks i had far greater respect for the artists that night- just because they got up on stage and gave great performances in front of a massive audience. Who cares if the music wasn't exactly my bag- I just thought bloody great job for getting up there and doing it and giving it some. They all had great voices too. I guess it would have been amazing to have seen some of their own material but that isn't what X-Factor or C-Star (as this was called) was about. It would be great to get the winners up on UBR- on the Undercover Team to start hearing their story following the C-Star comp.
SITOVETSKY TRIO...DOUBLE AMAZING
2009-05-27 00:19:49
Forgot to mention...(prob all those years of partying taking effect!)...last nights performance at the Wigmore Hall of the Sitovetsky Trio was amazing times a million. The set up of the trio is piano, violin and cello. These guys are world class musicians and I can honestly say that last nights performance was beyond perfection. There was not one moment during the whole performance where I slipped out of conciousness...which is what can happen occassionally at a gig ...or classical 'concert' should I say (!)...it was so passionate and perfect...and emotional. Those guys were certainly feeling it...and the audience was totally engaged. It was almost like the audience was united as one- because every person was just lovin every single moment and was totally captivated for every single second. I hope that there is something that UBR can do to help these guys. I did have a chat with the editor of the Classic FM magazine the other day and ANY kind of exposure we can get for them through even just that magazine will be amazing, but hopefully more. Every person in the whole country should get to experience seeing those guys live. It was truely magical. Look them up- Sitovetsky Trio!
LITTLE BOOTS...AMAZING...
2009-05-27 00:08:34
Wow- ended up seeing a little single launch gig tonight of the amazing Little Boots in the Apple Store on Oxford Street. I love her sound- that amazing 80's electro pop vibe is so wicked. I only popped into the shop to buy a charger today and managed to blag some press passes for the gig tonight. Right time right place scenario. I was well impressed with her live performance though- all the beats and synths are genius. I actually found it quite inspiring as a writer- I think it has given me some direction on the vibe I'd like to try. Its all about heavy beats and dirty bass synths for me next weekend in the studio- I'm lovin that vibe. I was getting way too downbeat love song bollox last weekend and didn't really know where to go next- so gonna try out my new song I've been writing with some heavier shit underneath. Gotta try. It will prob sound shit but who cares...
WELCOMING DAN AND KAT TO THE UBR TEAM...
2009-05-24 23:23:19
I'd like to welcome another two very useful team members on board the UBR team....Dan Pamment - who was a product manager at a record company and is now the MD of an events company and books bands...artists...and is looking for more for events he puts on all the time. A very cool contact and person to have on board. We love Dan.Another UBR person we love is Kat from Purple PR...seriously read her profile she has worked with some amazing artists and is here at UBR to give advice to artists- because she is just simply an amazing person! If you have a specific Q for either team members just post a note on our forum and we'll ensure they get them.Laterzzzz.
ITS NOT ABOUT LUCK ITS ABOUT GRAFT.
2009-05-20 23:03:38
People in interviews keep going on about how it is 'luck' that helps you to get somewhere in the music industry. I really think that is bollox. There are so many things that you can do to put yourself out there and get in the right place at the right time...just having a strategy and going for it definitely works. I think that back in the day- years ago when it was all about getting a big record deal perhaps you needed to be vvvv lucky but now it is all about YOU being the record company, you releasing your own records, YOU being on twitter 24/7 and creating a hype around your act, and YOU getting the gigs. Its all possible just a fucking lot of work- nothing is handed to anyone on a plate. You have to be a slave to your act- if you don't have a manager.
The band is a business- and that is what our business team will be able to assist with- any tips or info that can help on the journey to becoming a muso-business person. You have to work all the hours in the day to be the business person...and then to write the music and be creative too..its definitely a challenge but do-able. If you have the brains to play an instrument and write music then you have the brains to progress in the music industry. A record company would pay out significant amounts of money to have someone sitting there on Facebook/Myspace/Twitter all day long- and anyone can do this- so why don't you be that person for your own band? In fact I would love it if that was my job- coz it is as easy as pie you just need to be on it all the time. The benefit of using those things is it is more effective than printing flyers and handing them out at a gig- and doesn't cost a penny. Twitter definitely is the way forward at the moment.
So bollox to luck. I think it is all about hard graft... and great music of course...but you already know that you music is amazing right???!!
THE TRUTH HITS HOME.
2009-05-20 02:59:17
Since my last blog I have had my first ever full band practice, had a singing lesson and been to a lyric writing workshop as part of London Song Writers week. The lessons learned from all are- 1)singing/performing in a band=needing a very strong vocal (which I don't have- now I know but better to know now and do something about it) and there is absolutely no chance of going out and doing a gig after one practice- more like 100 practices!!! 2) Singing properly (i.e not just in the studio- where anything can be made to sound good/strong when the reality is proper singing...) requires vocal coaching and lots of practice in front of a mirror (apparently!)) 3) Writing strong lyrics is about exploring different angles of a subject/topic- whereas I have been writing lyrics that a 5 year old could prob write. It was REALLY useful to go to the workshop and get some ideas- but the whole workshop thing isn't really me. I couldn't really give two hoots about other people in the class- I just want to learn for me (prob v selfish but just being honest here!). I don't really have time to care about other peoples emotions and why they are so depressed..and writing etc. I felt like I was in a therapy workshop at The Priory. Went in feeling really optimistic about life and came out wanting to kill myself!!! Tips from the workshop will be published soon on our undercover section- once I get the stamina to pick myself up from my song writer workshop inflicted depression and type it up for y'll. Hopefully there should be some tips that will help you.
In terms of my objectives- for carrying on writing- I'm just gonna keep going doing what I am doing and hopefully these recent incidents of developing myself as an artist have helped in SOME way. Its prob confused me more than anything- so I'm just not going to let it effect me too much, which is prob the way forward. I'm gonna write and not think about too much else. Ah.... and breath.....its all about small steps from now on because miracles can't happen over night....
I LOVE BUSKERS- PART DEUX
2009-05-07 01:59:35
This is prob my millionth blog on buskers...and this is not just because we are involved with Busking Cancer (the campaign that Rod Stewert is involved with...and UBR but we'll announce details on that next week) but- I LOVE BUSKERS on the underground. I don't know what it is about Buskers at the moment- and prob because I spend an awful lot of time on the underground - but they just brighten up my day by 100%. They have become the sound track to my life. In fact I am going to write a song about buskers when I hit the studio next weekend. Buskers don't get enough credit. There is something really special about London underground buskers. Coming home tonight at Leicester Square station everyone going up the escalators was singing along to an Oasis track sung by a cool cheeky chappy surfer looking young guitarist putting his upbeat almost beach boys style edge on the song. It has inspired me to do two things- 1. write a song about Buskers 2. try recording a cover in the studio. After getting all that feedback on our songs a few weeks back from various music industry people- it kinda put a strange energy on the song writing partnerhip I was involved with so I have decided to proceed on my own- well I had to because I was bursting with ideas and couldn't wait to try them out with drums, bass, and layered harmonies. Basically I was dumped and had to overcome it by getting into writing on my own. Its like a relationship - you are used to working with/being with other people and then you go your separate ways and you have to learn to live on your own- and it is always better that way so you don't get hurt/dumped or whatever again. That is what Logic and Cubase is all about- saves hurt and destruction! It was pretty scary doing it on my own after only ever writing songs with someone else- who had lots of experience writing with Warner and other majors- and me with practically zero experience. Anyway- I ended up writing three new tracks at the weekend and feel pretty good for it. The vox are ropey as hell- but I feel more complete now I have got back into writing. I can write about what I want...put whatever beats on that I want and whatever sound effects i see fit. Ah. Maybe the split was a good thing after all.
Anyway- onwards and upwards- What rhymes with 'Busker'???
ENJOYING THE MOMENT...
2009-04-25 14:48:51
I've noticed recently I get so much contrasting feedback on my songs/music. It's almost like there was a feedback overload a few weeks ago when I just couldn't help but ask pretty much every music industry person I knew to give some feedback on my music. I mean you can hardly blame me...this is what UBR is about. I think it is just great to hear different people's perspectives - even if it is not exactly what you want to hear. After sitting back and taking a break for a few weeks from writing after the Kate Nash bomb shell pushed us completely apart [that was where I was thinking a UBR psychologist would have been a good thing- but the TEAM have said categorically- "NO"}- we have decided to proceed with working together. Starting with a song we started a while back and something I've been writing since the split. The point that I was trying to get to here (but went off on a little tangent) is that lots of feedback is good- just draw from it what you want because after all it is just people opinions. One thing that Olivier did say to be is there is 'no right or wrong' in music. Its helpful to get opinions- from different areas from different levels of expertise but music is something that should always be enjoyed- playing, writing, gigging....whatever. The lesson I have learned from my little market research is don't take it all too seriously or you'll end up in band rehab! Some people will love your music (for whatever reason- just as a personal thing or they think that it suits the current market requirement) and some people might just point out the negatives. It's up to you how you take on board the info...and use it. I've decided to just get out there and do a couple of gigs and enjoy the moment. I don't feel like we need any feedback for a while.
EXPOSURE MUSIC AWARDS...TONIGHT!
2009-04-25 14:12:00
The Exposure Music Awards are being hosted tonight. We wish all the bands the best of luck. Looking forward to hearing the results. Yet another source of great unsigned/undiscovered music.
UBR TV- NEVER MIND THE BUZZCOCKS
2009-04-25 12:30:01
I'm very excited to have on board the UBR TV team- a great music/comedy TV show writer who wrote a number of Never Mind the Buzzcocks series. That rounded off the week nicely! Can't wait to get scripting.
MINUS IQ- ALBUM LAUNCH
2009-04-24 02:20:07
Those beautiful boys did it again- they lived up to their 'ubr amazing' status at the Camden Barfly for their album launch tonight. There are some seriously great tunes coming from that band at the moment- always a little shocker in their set which makes me engrosed in their charm once more - on the performance and song writing side. I'm not an expert - just playing in a band myself- but I think these guys are starting to hit on something very cool in their all round offering. The only thing I was wondeing is I wonder what these guys would sound like playing at a huge stadium ...with the massive-est sound system...I'd like to know what that might sound like because their energy seems wasted on that little Barfly stage. Next time these guys play - I have to see them on a massive stage or I might die of frustration.
THE WORLD ACTUALLY HAS GONE GAGA!
2009-04-20 22:03:12
Its true...the world has literally gone GAGA! In a meeting I had with Simon Gavin today, our UBR record company Daddy, and apparently she is the biggest selling artist right now. OK so what? When? How? Who? Why? ....how did that happen! Well- she has got fucking good pop chorus's that's bloody what! Sorry for the passionate tone but when I saw her on Jonathan Ross the other night I thought that it was a piss take ...some modern day Spinal Tap/Little Britain piss takey comedy act. The girl's just got great songs and that is how/why (all of the above) she has got to be where she is now and it just proves the power of songs...you can really be a complete ...actually I don't know what Lady bloody Gaga is...I would say weirdo but I generally like weirdos...same with 'freak'...she is beyond that...BUT she REALLY has great catchy original songs and that is gold dust as an artist. She is just a little awkward on the eye/brain in interviews. So...back to the studio me thinks...3 chords should do the trick...hmmm now for the hit song title...if GAGA can do it....
TOURDATES.CO.UK...MAGAZINE
2009-04-19 15:10:16
I was at a gig at 333 in Hoxton Square (London) on Thursday evening, and when I left I picked up a copy of "Tourdates" magazine. If you haven't seen one- it is basically like a newspaper with all the local gigs listings in and they are in most cities. I didn't release that if you list all your gigs online on tourdates.co.uk you will automatically have your gigs listed in the magazine- which you can pick up just about anywhere. I always seem a small step behing these things- but literally - as a free service which takes a second to update online (listing your gigs) this a very cool little free service. It's all about 'bums on seats' at gigs- so any way of encouraging more people to your gigs and getting word out is a bonus. We say- get listing now- tourdates.co.uk (they are not paying me to say that- I genuinely mean it!)
BRITISH MUSIC EXPERIENCE
2009-04-09 23:10:04
Today- we were invited to the British Music Experience at the 02 and I LOVED IT! It's one of those things that you are pleasantly surprised by- you find yourself loving it when you never really expected to when you are hard to please like me...enough about me and my complex mentality...the exhibition is an interactive music experience basically. If you don't know a lot about music and want to know more- i.e about different artists through the decades...or want to try out a guitar and have Katie Tunstall teach you a few chords to one of her songs...have a go at singing in a vocal booth...listen to old rock stars talk about funny stories...feel like you on on stage with Oasis...that kinda vibe...If you fancy half a day larking around doing all that malarky then get yourself over there. Not sure how long it is there for but well worth a look if you are a music buff... or music bimbo...it kinda apeals to all in my opinion. I loved just fiddling about on the electric guitars- even though I'm not a guitarist it was an amazing Gibson and just playing one note sounded great through those amazing head phones. Definitely one for a rainy day!
COOL NEW TOPMAN GIGS...EVENTS...
2009-04-07 20:10:31
I had a meeting with the press person from Topman today and they are fully committed to helping support the music industry by putting on some interesting music events, which are run by an artist controller hence being called CTRL. The first event is being controlled by the lady behind Ladyhawke in Manchester. It seems like there are loads of other cool music events coming up and they will be telling us all about what is going on so that Richie (our news editor) can tell you all about it...we'll be the first to know about what they are doing so should have some exclusive news soon..and we are hoping some opportunities for unsigned bands so watch this space (or at least the UBR news section). Well done Topman- loving your work!
JURIES OUT ON UBR PSYCHOLOGIST...
2009-04-05 22:20:52
I'd forgotten why I took a year break from being in a band and then it hit me yesterday...the forces of internal politics. I've really had a whole week of it. As soon as things start getting serious and out of the studio suddendly all that harmony (both physical and mental) goes out the window and fires...winds...storms...all sorts start emerging...I think the next step is a UBR mediator...or psychotherapist is needed to get feet back on the ground. I am hoping for a fresh new energy to start this week. I just love playing/performing music and that is what it is about. I hate having to make decisions about time frames, the best next steps, where to record...and about a hundred other variables. Either a good manager or (short term) some psychotherepy love required...or a bottle of vodka! Juries out.
GETTING OUT OF THE KATE NASH VIBE...
2009-03-30 02:27:45
I've just spend the most frustrating weekend laying down/re-doing the vocals in the studio- for three tracks- trying to steer away from the new comparison that was made last week (to Kate Nash).
I just feel drained from the whole experience and now I can't see the good in the music...saying that I have probably heard them about 50 times in one day. I don't think I'd like Kings of Leon "Closer" hearing it 50 times in one day. Maybe 49 times...but def not 50!!
Hmmmm...I think I need some good sleep and not listen to my music for a while.
I am really looking forward to having the first band rehearsal next weekend- that will be a mile stone point and it will be amazing just having live drums, bass and piano.
The most double amazing thing will be playing a gig in a few weeks. ahh ..can't wait.
LISTEN TO YOUR 'COMPETITION'
2009-03-25 14:06:17
I had the biggest shocker of my life this week when someone compared my vocals to Kate Nash...she is great in what she does and definitely isn't on my iTunes....but HELL...I really never want to have that comparison made ever again! The person who made the connection is a music industry person who I respect - but I still had to check Kate Nash out on Spotify.com as soon as I got home only to find that the analysis was correct- I am sounding pretty much identical in terms of vocal style. Even though this was not something I wanted to discover and the similarities never crossed my mind, because I don't ever listen to Kate Nash, it was good to know now- rather than carry on in a style which I don't even like. Anyway- the happy ending [for me] to this story is all my vocals will be re-recorded this weekend in the studio. I don't even know where the cockney accent even came from because I was brought up in Ascot! lol. I moved to the East End of London a few months ago but wasn't expecting to develop a cockney twang quite this quick....funny stuff! Right...where's that microphone?!
FILL YOUR BOOTS...LIST YOUR GIGS
2009-03-25 02:19:58
Every band who has entered their music on UBR on the SIGN UP pages can now use your login/password to enter all your gigs into your band profile page. All your gigs will be listed on The Unsigned Band Review listing pages and searchable by those who want to go and see bands in their selected region. Fill your boots and get listing(I wish the web designers told me it was launching today so we could have got a news story on UBR...oh what the heck..life is full of surprises!)
THE BAND IS BORN...
2009-03-19 23:55:36
It's taken a good 9 months... from never writing a complete song to creating some songs which have some "commercial potential" [apparently] and a unique sound. It sounds promising... but laying down a chorus here...a piano line there ...without either performing any of the tracks or even rehearsing them live with a band means exactly the latter is the next natural step. I am so nervous [that the songs won't work live and it's back to the drawing board] and excited [because I have a secret incling that it will be amazing... but it is unknown- right now- if the songs can be delivered live]. The band set-up is nearly complete - just awaiting final confirmation on a drummer but bass, piano, and cello are ready to rock n roll. I think I am the most excited person in the world right now. Our first ever gig will be a showcase to a big publishing company...and believe it or not I am not shitting myself!! Major excitement more like...haha. What happens next only fate will reveal...
UKULELE OASIS...
2009-03-05 02:28:42
Having had one of those days where nothing seemed to flow it was truly amazing stumbling across an oasis of ukalele players strumming away to Blur tracks in the downstairs of a small West End pub. It was fantastic to see about 50 people with their ukalele's - just regular pub customers singing and strumming together with their instruments ranging from Gibson lookalikes- to big crazy things! Ah- so so so good. All the shit from the day was left well behind from experiencing a true magical musical moment [that may sound over the top but it really was amazing - check out The Royal George off Tottenham Court Road on a Wednesday night- I think they are there every week]
MINUS IQ- E-NEWSLETTERS
2009-03-03 18:34:23
I am so impressed with Reverb Nations services. Because I personally haven't used them before I didn't know what they were about but I am gradually realising that their applications and services are integral for a gigging band- with their digital marketing facilities and database management. I just got another email newsletter from Minus IQ- the band I saw at 93 Feet East in Shoredich on Saturday. The email looked really professional and had all the dates of their upcoming tours listed in a really organised and clear way. The mail had text which was written quite clearly- from the band themselves- which just made it really fresh and personal. All this was done via Reverb Nation. You can guarantee that once I start gigging I'm going to be all over Reverb Nations cool services. I know that Adam - our in-house unsigned band manager has used a lot of these services with his artist- Juan Zelada.
I will be definitely signing up to Reverb Nation once I start gigging with the band. It's nice to know that these things have been so thought out by someone else- because they know exactly what bands need to maintain a good relationship with their fans- and ready for us amateurs to start acting like professionals. Check out Reverb Nation if you haven't already. Seriously- it's a good'n.
MINUS IQ- AMAZING NEW BAND...
2009-03-01 21:13:15
Last night I took a friend to see Minus IQ [at 93 Feet East in Shoredich] a cool new young band who are doing really well for themselves. They have a rocky/electo-y thing going on and they looked really great. The best thing for me was that their energy on stage was awesome. Having had a few vinos before the gig I was looking for something upbeat to have a dance to- and it was perfect. I didn't want them to finish. Those guys seriously know how to put on a good show. When Bad Robots came on straight afterwards - although their music is quite cool- I was really bored by them just standing there and no passion. The lead singer had a cool beard though!
I'd seriously recommend going to see Minus IQ - for that feel good factor... and if you want a work out- all their songs have that danceability-ness. I hope the singer doesn't think I'm a stalker coz i was prob a bit over enthusiastic after the show. No- what the hell it was an awesome gig - you have to pass the love around when really great music is involved [lol]I was well impressed with my mailing list activation email that I got from Minus IQ today. I never used to send out emails to my bands database- which is really stupid. Especially when I used to spend loads on text messages to people who never used to come to the gigs [because they lived 3 hours away or whatever]- but had a whole database of people who had asked to learn about future gigs which could have been sent for free. Oh well. Live and learn. i wouldn't make that mistake now.
ROBERT PLANT...PROPER CHILLED
2009-02-26 23:54:37
Just got hold of Robert Plant's album "Raising Sand" with Alison Krauss at a meeting with his PR today and I'm loving the vibe, really chilled out...I wish I still had the Golf GTI to burn along with it on at full vol. [Now I have an Oyster card and iPod which is nearly as good!]It would definitely need to be played after 3 rounds of Appetite for Destruction when the head is a little achey and in need of soothing theraputic sounds.Listening to the sound of Alison Krauss's voice - I had forgotten how proper female vocals should be like...and not the amateur sound of my own voice in the studio which I am used to at the moment.
"Fortune Teller" (I liked Plant's raw chunky vocals on this track) and "Stick with me Baby" were my faves on this album.
Last week Kenney Jones (Who/Faces Drummer) gave me his album at a meeting I had with him. The band is called The Jones Gang. I absolutely loved it. It could only be described as soft rock perfection, a genre of which I guess I am not really used to, but warmed to it straight away with its flawless sound. I thought it sounded quite pop - but I was put in place by a UBR team member who said it was definitely 'soft rock' and seemed almost offended that I had said it was 'poppy'. whoops. Anyway a seriously cool little album. Again I wished that I still had my car to listen to it in- to get the full potential with volume up to the MAX appreciating every little moment of the music without upsetting the neighbours or those sat next to me on the underground. I wonder what little music surprises I'll get over the coming weeks on my mission to provide the best service ever to unsigned bands...I'll keep you posted...
BUSINESS TEAM
2009-02-25 02:59:35
Because I am shit at reading books...and am shit with money decisions...I am really pleased that we have a Business Team in development on UBR. The team is headed up by Gez Orakwusi who is basically the guru of music law and music business affairs. He used to be the head of business affairs for Sony music (check out his profile on the teams section for more info) and is going to be giving artists from UBR some ongoing advice on anything business related that we should know about- definitions on different legal docs/agreements, how best to/options on how to allocate budgets for different situations...i.e do you spend that £200 you saved up on flyers for a gig or are you best spending that on online marketing etc. There is so much that Gez can offer and it is amazing to have him on board UBR. Gez will be building the Business Team with other experts- music lawyers, accountants and genius's...that we would never normally come across in our day-to-day lives.
THANK YOU CARNABY STREET...
2009-02-24 23:21:38
Trying to get properly into the role of being a rock star (hmm...well you gotta try!) I went to the hairdressers and when they asked what I wanted I said "make me look like a rock star...not a lesbian or ginger...but anything else is fine"...when they did a purple/red mullet I started getting slight stage fright of even leaving the salon! After leaving I took a walk around the West End to guage the reaction of passers by and looked at myself in shop windows at different angles...and suddenly I was approached by two ladies from Company Magazine on Carnaby Street who were looking for 'super cool and trendy people' for a feature in the magazine and complimented me on the 'cool' barnet! haha. How funny! So they took the pic's and asked a few q's about my style inspirations...[which I had none and anyway the head wasn't quite in the place to answer questions like that- from the few too many wines I had last night] Anyway- just thought that it was a funny little thing to happen. I then walked around the West End for a further two hours to 1. Burn some of those cals. put on from the shite eaten in the studio as inspiration food and 2. To show off the new rock n roll barnet with complete confidence! and an unexpected number 3. ..Which was listening to some cool musicians down in Covent Garden Market area which finished off the evening nicely!
FINISHED THE DEMOS!
2009-02-20 14:03:44
Well after a few arguments, lots of take out food, and many late nights we have finally finished our first demo in the studio! I am just awaiting the last mix of the final song but I am just so excited. I have done the whole- play the tracks to everyone you know to get feedback on the songs and everyone seems to really like them and I played them to a few industry pals and they also seem to like them. So turning 'like them' to something materialising- that is the next step in the ladder I guess- the next challenge. The enjoyment was in creating the songs so what happens next is a bonus (if anything!). Ah...so so happy! Now for working out to rid a few of those unwanted pounds put on by late night junk food dans la studio!! (grrr)
NOW THIS IS AMAZING...

Oh my god- Spotify.com is the best thing I have ever seen/heard/used/had (all of the above). If you don't have it on your computer/laptop serious don't wait another second. It is basically an application that you download for FREE and you can listen to whatever music you want....It sounds like a lie but it's not. I don't lie and I am very excited by it even though I have had it for ages. The music enthusiasts dream come true...enjoy!

GOLDHEART ASSEMBLY...THEY KNOW HOW TO PLAY IT!
2009-02-06 02:43:55
Ok so the concept of approaching a publishing deal is starting to sink in. Its so simple- really- you have to think of your band as a business...it is worth something to a publishing company IF you have had interest from the press, you're getting radio play, maybe even your music on a TV advert or film! So what are the chances of getting your music played all over the radio etc (!?)...To be honest- it was in a meeting I had today with a band, who will be getting involved in UBR, Goldheart Assembly that brought clarity to my mind about all this publishing shenanigans. They have gigged a lot, play great music, have an original look and give a great show on stage. They have 'it' as it were. They have gigged at the right places and been seen by the right people because of that and they have the 'whole package'. They have already been offered a deal from a major publisher but didn't take it because they are building their worth- and getting played on Radio One all the time, had a page in NME a couple of weeks back, doing a tour to build a following. This band are seriously doing well and it is amazing. I was surprised when Jamie said that they didn't take the publishing deal but when he explained [in simple terms] why and that they are building up interest themselves and it is not worth selling their songs now - it all clicked into place in my mind. Jamie will be blogging on UBR during his tour and hopefully will explain a little more about his stategy and road to success...and tell us where we should be gigging where Radio One DJ's will hear our music...I'm all ears!!
GRACE JONES
2009-01-29 04:31:23
My best mate went to see Grace Jones tonight at the Round House in Camden and I'm so jealous- just the description she gave of the show sounded amazing. Apparenly she had a glitter ball on her head with lasers shining down on it, and did a whole track while hola hooping and introducing the band at the same time!!!!! That just sounds like the most amazing thing I have ever heard of. Even her partner who doesn't normally get too hyped up at gigs was right up at the front "whooping". LOL. It just sounds fantastically magnificent. A true performer. A belated new years resolution is to go to more gigs from this moment on...unsigned ...established...bring it on!
SIMON GAVIN AT UNIVERSAL AT UBR
2009-01-29 04:15:38
Following the ending of the Orange Unsigned Act Simon Gavin has decided to come on board UBR and provide some feedback to UBR artists. Ah...I am so so so excited by this. If a UBR artist gets a stonking record deal from the Daddy of Universal himself that would be the most amazing thing in the world. We don't make promises here at UBR ...we are not a competition to win a specific prize like a record deal...we do things organically. You enter your music...our panel make comments and suggestions to you...and then if you really catch their attention...you never know what might happen!
PUBLISHING DEALS...PUBLISHING RIGHTS...ERR?!
2009-01-26 05:40:15
Another week emerges and I am secretly hoping that the subject of publishing deals doesn't come up in conversations/meetings. I have an automatic switch embedded in my subconsious which means I literally cannot absorb or process information relating to publishing. It is my ignorance and lack of knowledge which is the main problem but I am working on it. I just need things spelling out in simple terms sometimes. I know there must be others out there like me- who don't really get it therefore one of my many missions for UBR will include a dummies guide to publishing deals/agreements and the variables that they may contain and what us unsigned people should know about. I think it is a case of not knowing what you should be asking. Obviously no one signs any contract/agreement without a lawyer.. BUT anyway... this is something I have been ignoring and should know the basics...we all should. When I have Olivier (UBR team) talking at me at what seems like a million words per minute- on this subject- I cannot digest. So - another challenge set. Luckily I have a meeting booked with the chief of a major publishing company so this should kick it off. Watch this space.
GIBSON UNSIGNED
2009-01-26 05:17:52
I had a sneaky peak at the edit of the Gibson event that we put on recently featuring three of our most promising acts of 2009- and it is looking awesome! The idea is to give unsigned bands the opportunity to play which ever Gibson Guitar they want, an interview with our presenter, a style photoshoot, and have their performance of their best tracks filmed. The bands are then all packaged up and ready for the big open space of the music industry...with a little help from our A&R expert, Olivier Behzadi, to give his opinion and advice. I can't wait for you to see the film...it will be up on UBR TV shortly so keep checking...not long now. We have so many opportunities for bands ongoing in 2009 and this was just one of them. The more bands who enter UBR the more opportunities we can give to bands...so get entering NOW!
WELCOME RICHIE, BUCKET AND JORDAN
2009-01-26 04:13:49
I'd like to welcome some new recruits onto the ever evolving teams on UBR:Firstly Richie Blackmore our new online editor- quite frankly this man is amazing. He deals with the news on UBR and will be the main main if you have anything that you think our unsigned bands and unsigned fans wanna hear about. If you have anything useful to add to the UBR mix then you can contact Richie through our contact form located at the bottom of the page...Secondly and penultimately I'd like to welcome...and I don't use the word lightly here...AMAZING...Jordan!Jordan is an actor and has officially joined our TV Team- this little man will be helping inject some magic into some of our TV shows we'll be doing a little bit later in 2009. You may have seen this guy around he recently fronted the Absolute Radio TV adverts and stared in the film In Bruge along with loads of other great films...Finally I'd like to welcome Bucket- this chap defines the phrase rock n roll...Bucket played in Bad Company and has worked with some very cool legendary artists- Pete Townsend, Iron Maiden and loads of other cool people...Bucket will be able to give his expert advice to rock guitarists...anything you want to ask him feel free on the sign up page on the www.unsignedbandreview.com SIGN UP area.
PLAY IT TO EVERYONE YOU KNOW!
2009-01-17 15:26:08
In working with a very experienced song writer I have learned so much recently...last week we were putting live drums sounds over the songs we created which I think sounded great. There was an energy lacking before which has now been injected into the music. We've also added a new verse to an existing song...and will be adding a new chorus to the verse that we took out. I just get so excited when these things become apparent because it means- more songs for us to choose from when we finalise the demo. One song is now two. Some advice that the Automatic gave to us at the Vodafone Live Music Awards was "when you think you have a great song play it to everyone you know and if they don't think it is the best song they have ever heard then you need to write a better song". I liked this advice. When I get out of the studio I do tend to play the weekends work to a few people for just this reason- even if they don't react to something or don't say it is amazing- I think this is good because it makes me want to write something better. If my co-write partner knew I was playing it to people I don't think he would be too happy...shhh don't tell anyone.
MYSPACE- WHAT NEXT?
2009-01-08 02:31:09
Having a band IS like having your own business- and unless you have a great manager and/or a great record company behind you it seems impossible to keep up with it all. What the heck do you do once you have a zillion friends on MySpace, some great tracks, have played gigs all over the show-what next?
GREAT SONGS...
2009-01-07 02:46:14
or..you can follow a formula almost with both song writing and the band in general...and create a band or product that will apeal to a wider market....or a specific market. As an artist I am pretty clueless about this stuff...although I have picked up some great tips from the song writer I am working with at the moment. The conclusion that I came to recently is that it really is difficult to create a really really good hooky song...that has commercial potential....
ROUTES...
2009-01-07 02:41:30
There seem to be so many routes to go down as a band/artist - you can play in a band creating songs that you enjoy playing but would never appeal to a wide market, or they might but not in this decade, therefore right now filling the local pub with your loyal mates is the best you are going to get... or..
DATED?
2009-01-07 02:35:46
The feedback I have had on my music from one source is that it is dated which I totally take on board...but that feedback has made me want to improve the sound and bring it into the 21st century...the challenge is exciting...
LOVIN THE MUSIC...
2009-01-02 21:06:08
After being in unsigned bands for years and then taking a break to earn money and build a career I have now come back to writing and recording music again and loving it so much. I have been busy working with a writer who was signed a large major record label for years to develop some music that we can publish and sell. So 2009 - the year of change for me but one thing I do know is that whatever is happening in my life- music is the one thing (either writing or playing)- that makes me truly happy.
A FRESH NEW UBR 2009...
2009-01-02 20:59:25
After a very long few months of fine-tuning the website we have nearly got there! The site- as you can see has been launched and our panel are busy listening to all the music on the MySpace links that you have sent us - so that they can give their feedback to help you as an artist. We are still developing the Access All Areas part of the site- which will give links and information about other opportunities for unsigned bands and singers as well as discounts on music equipment etc. It will be worth the wait...
